We’re taking a shorter look than usual at Saturday afternoon’s new episode of “The X Factor,” in part because there were so many acts who we have a feeling we will forget in about two hours. It’s been a rough season when it comes to talent, which may in part explain why the ratings have been lower.
However, there was one act that we found to be particularly striking during this show on he sole basis that they brought something that we have not really seen before in any shape or form. Who are we talking about here in particular? Lauren Smith, who came on the stage with a guitar and a look that was in many ways reminiscent of this show’s version of Taylor Swift, and she carried a serious singer / songwriter vibe to what she did. Ultimately, she could be this season’s Janet Devlin if she makes it far enough and gets enough of an edit.
On the opposite side of things, we had someone who brought a serious sense of camp to the show in Tammy Cartwright. She not only had a great voice, but she was just so much fun to watch perform out on the stage with her take on “One Night Only.” The other thing we liked? That she did not come out waving her cancer survivor flag and made this into something a little bit more than just a traditional sob story that we have on shows like these. Unfortunately, the show then quickly followed this up with a major sob story in Jade Collins, a young lady who has grown up by and large without her father. This ultimately is why we hate this: now, this girl is going to have this story following her up for the rest of the show.
