While on some reality competition shows you see producers try and be “cute” by bringing on people with past ties to the judges; but on the season 2 premiere of “The X Factor” earlier this week, it really just ended up being uncomfortable. We met a man in Don Philip who once recorded with Britney Spears on her first album over a decade ago, but failed to impress any of the judges this time after tearing up and saying to Britney “I thought I would never see you again.”
So what was more surprising to Philip than anything else? Apparently, it was the discussion of his sexuality from the judges that made headlines when he first filmed his audition earlier this year, but never made it to the air. Speaking to the New York Post, he claims that he confided to producers that he was gay before coming on stage, and was then baited into talking about it in front of the judges when L.A. Reid questioned him about a “secret”:
“I knew immediately what they were talking about. I only had one secret.”
This discussion (which Fox claims was not due to the judges having any knowledge of Philip at all) did not really go anywhere on stage, as Philip claimed that Spears acted disapproving back in the day about his sexuality, which is something that she denies. Now that he has been through this whole experience and his sexuality is out there, Philip admits that he is upset he was put through everything by the producers to have it all be cut from the show, anyway, save for his singing:
“It makes it kind of worse … My mother has still not spoken to me. It is like I went through all this [coming out] for nothing. Everyone knows I am gay now.”
Did you think that this audition was too much to bear, especially since it felt so opportunistic to get a reaction out of Britney? If you want to read up on some more positive auditions, you can do so by checking out the story over at this link.
