As it turns out, Jeff Winger’s father is not the only parental figure that we are going to meet on “Community” during season 4; as a matter of fact, the NBC show looks to be going all out in showing us even more of how Shirley Bennett became the Bible-loving woman with a temper that we have come to know and cherish (even when she goes into the falsetto) over the past few years.
According to E! News, producers for the series, which is moving to Friday nights this season starting with the October 19 premiere, are currently casting both Shirley’s mother and father for the fifth episode of the season. Shirley’s father sounds as though he is going to be a rather grumpy older gentleman, while her mother is someone who will have a little more of an edge than you would originally expect. (This may be where Shirley gets her dark side from.)
If this does turn out to be the least season for “Community” it would make sense that we were meeting so many parents considering that would give us that much more understanding about the characters. Even if it is not the last year, though, it still makes sense to open us up even more to some of these people’s lives. If the show does somehow continue beyond this season, we are going to have to know a little bit more about their extracurricular activities and personal lives so that we can establish a world beyond Greendale where they can all hang out. (It’s either that or everyone ends up flunking their senior years to stick around with Dean Pelton for a while loner.)
