Over the course of the summer, we had the opportunity to hear some absolutely thrilling news when it comes to Emilie de Ravin’s Belle for “Once Upon a Time” season 2: the actress is now a series regular. Despite only appearing in just a few episodes last season as one of the only people capable of taming Rumpelstiltskin at all, she is now going to have an integral role in what happens in Storybrooke.
So what will this role be exactly? This much is at least somewhat of a mystery, but executive producer Edward Kitsis tells TVLine in a new interview that she is going to continue to try and push Robert Carlyle’s character away from the darkness, and hopefully towards some sort of new understanding that he does not need to be powerful in order to be happy:
“Rumple has always been a character who has had to choose between love and power, and he has always chosen power … So now that Belle, this wild card, has come into his life, how will it affect his meticulous plan? And which path will he now choose because of it?”
In bringing magic into Storybrooke at all, he clearly chose “power” in that now he and Regina are the only two people who can now control their environment. We’re curious to see how Belle will react to that, and whether or not he’ll try to justify it by saying that he can better protect him from harm if he has the upper hand over everyone else.
Hopefully, we’ll also get an even greater sense of Belle’s journey this season beyond just the time she spent with Rumple in the castle in the fairy tale world that was. After all, she has already been tied to Grumpy’s story, and we are sure that she met a few others along the way.
