‘So You Think You Can Dance’ review: Chehon Wespi-Tschopp has Nigel’s vote

It has been quite the season of performances on “So You Think You Can Dance,” but as you know already, not everyone can end up being the champion … but luckily on this season, there are two winners in a man and a woman.

Going into the first part of the finale Wednesday, we had a feeling that the winners for the season were going to be none other than a pair that previously worked together this season in Cyrus Spencer and Eliana Girard. In the case of the former, we had a performer who brought everything he had to the show without a ton of dance experience. Not only is he an inspiration, but he’s just such a fun and likable guy. As for Eliana, she’s just such a technically brilliant dancer that she forces us to smile without even saying a word.

After a night that was stuffed full of fantastic performances, plus a declaration from Nigel Lytgoe that Chehon Wespi-Tschopp was his favorite dancer of the entire season, even though Cyrus was the on he liked the best. Since there were no results this week (we’ll have to wait until the finale to find out more), let’s focus instead here on just a few of the standout performances.

Cyrus and Eliana, paso doble – It was a pretty entertaining performance, but at the same time we had a feeling that the entire routine felt a little slow and played into Cyrus’ ballroom limitations.

Tiffany, contemporary – With All-Star Will, this was a good performance … but part of us wishes that there was something more here when it came to story.

Chehon and Eliana, ballet – This may be the best showcase of ballet ever on this show. It was so solid, so fantastic, and so thoroughly enjoyable from the first second to the last.

Cyrus and Tiffany, hip hop – Is anyone else surprised that Tiffany actually managed to even steal this performance away from Cyrus? The best thing that he did here came via his own acting abilities.

Chehon, contemporary – This is a dance that really showed just how far Chehon has grown all season. We don’t think that he could have pulled this off week one, but he did here.

Eliana and Tiffany, Broadway – It was the return of the pole from Eliana’s introduction to the show earlier this season! We actually did not really care for much of the actual dance, though, as it felt a little too out of sync.

Chehon and Cyrus, jazz – This is where Cyrus was put through the wringer and Nigell called Chehon his favorite dancer; but to be honest, the guy held his own here rather well all things considered.

Eliana, contemporary – She and Alex Wong are perfect together. We don’t really know what else to say about this stunning piece from Travis Wall.

Tiffany and Chehon, rumba – For Chehon’s last showcase, we wonder how it looked to America. Why? There really wasn’t a lot of chemistry here.

Cyrus, animation – Wow. As great and fun as this routine with tWitch was, Nigel’s commentary afterwards was surprising. He admitted to Cyrus that Chehon would be getting his vote, mostly because he has worked for this all his life and Cyrus’ journey is in many ways still starting up.
