Is it possible that “MasterChef” had its best season yet this summer? We think so. There was a colorful cast of people who you either loved or hated, and the challenges were both traditional as well as experimental. Really, it was as though Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot took all of the best elements of the first two seasons and threw them into a blender.
For Tuesday’s finale, the show really kept it simple: all Christine Ha and Josh Marks really had to do was cook a three-course meal for the judges … but of course, this is a much harder task than it looks. The judges are tougher than they have been all season long, and one mistake could end up sending you home. Both chefs really ended up having some interesting strategies. For Josh, he really put himself out there to make restaurant-quality food that took what he knew up a notch. There were risks (a lobster reduction involving a blender), a touch of something familiar (grits), and some of Josh’s signature personality and flair. Meanwhile, Christine went with something that was close to her heart and her culture. Ramsay said that it was more “street food” than restaurant food, but it also just so happened to be delicious.
At the end of the day, both of these cooks had some flaws when it came to the meal that they presented the judges, but we felt throughout that Christine was going to be the winner. Josh had already been sent home once, and Christine has such an inspirational story that is completely and totally marketable to people buying her cookbook. Regardless of how you look at it, these are two people who no one would have expected to be in the finale of a cooking show, and this was as a result so refreshing to see.
Regardless of them both being deserving, there can only be one winner. So who was it? The judges made the expected move at the end of the night, and Christine now has the grand prize and title. It’s a deserving, inspirational win, and while we feel for Josh coming so close, it’s hard to be anything but thrilled for her.
