With the climate of the music industry being what it is at the moment, it is hardly a surprise to see that “Glee” made the decision to perform one of the most popular songs out there during the season 4 premiere airing Thursday night: “Call Me Maybe.” What is a bit more of a surprise, however, is how the show decided to make the Carly Rae Jepsen hit into a competition.
In the video below, you can check out what seems to be a video battle between four people to be the new leader of New Directions: Brittany (Heather Morris), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), Blaine (Darren Criss), and Wade (Alex Newell). What is a little bit interesting is that of this group, Tina is the only one who is an original member of the group. (Doesn’t that give her an advantage?) The song itself is crazy in that it basically leads to everyone trying to over-sing over each other, and what is a pretty innocent song ultimately becomes a little bit more of a battle royale.
Ultimately, what would be really entertaining to see is if someone ends up being named the captain of the glee club who is not even performing in this song. What about Artie to take the reigns? Kevin McHale’s character, like Tina, is an original member of the group; plus, he has an interest in production that could serve the glee club rather well during their actual performances. There’s no guarantee that Will (Matthew Morrison) will make a choice in the premiere, but it is important to establish the direction of the club without Rachel and Finn around.
What do you think about this performance, and who do you want to see as the new leader of the glee club? If you want to hear some of the other music from this episode, which includes a duet with Lea Michele and new cast member Melissa Benoist, be sure to head on over to the link here.
