‘Glee’ music preview: More from Lea Michele, Melissa Benoist … and Adele

A few days after we heard some of the first songs from the upcoming “Glee” premiere featuring the likes of Kate Hudson and Darren Criss, we now have something more to celebrate: the rest of the music from the episode entitled “The New Rachel.” You want a little bit of irony? Out of the songs that are currently listed as being part of the premiere, only one of them actually includes Lea Michele in some form or another.

With that being said, this aforementioned song may be one of the most popular songs in music history: Billy Joel’s iconic “New York State of Mind.” This song is performed with the classic piano accompaniment and some half-way-across-the-country vocals from Melissa Benoist’s character of Marley, who is already becoming in some ways Ryan Murphy’s new golden child. After all, she has two numbers within the span of her debut episode … which makes us wonder whether Tina is going to end up being left in the background yet again.

So what’s her other performance? Let’s just say that Benoist is taking the reigns from Amber Riley as the go-to New Directions member for Adele songs. Her version of “Chasing Pavements” is beautiful, but we also have to ask the questions: wouldn’t Adele songs on “Glee” be more effective if we did not hear at least one every season? This is the third straight season to feature the Grammy-winner, and it is the fifth song following “Turning Tables,” “Rolling in the Deep,” and the mash-up that featured “Rumour Has It” along with “Someone Like You.” (With this being said, this Trouble Tones performance is probably one of the five best performances that the show has ever put on.)

Finally, we have Jacob Artist’s character of Jake Puckerman singing The Fray’s “Never Say Never” (not the Justin Bieber hit of the same name) It’s a strong performance of a song that we don’t necessarily love, and we have a feeling that this is going to be used as his New Directions “audition.”
