‘The X Factor’ UK review: Meet a new Christopher Maloney

The X Factor” was full of surprises in the United Kingdom on Saturday: there were groups that actually got some time in the spotlight, a singer who came back from last year with a bang, and the always-fantastic audition that turns out good even when it looks like a trainwreck.

Here are the acts who stood out from the pack for one reason or another this week.

The It Girls – At this point, it is actually a surprise when we see a good group actually audition for this show rather than be put together by the judges. Unfortunately, we are still waiting. This group was pretty much a gang of happy chipmunks stuck in the 1960s. The only person who liked him was Geri Halliwell.

Times Red – Now, the wait is over! These guys were legitimately good, and they also were not a stereotypical boy bad thanks to their guitar-playing, beatboxing skills, and great harmonies. This was one of the few group performances that really sounded professional this early on the show, and we have to think that these guys are a lock to be in the live competitions and may even go pretty far.

Melanie McCabe – When you were in the past rejected for the show, what you really have to do in coming back is make sure that you do something to make the judges regret the decision that they made. Melanie was really a casualty of being in a really great category with young female singers, but this time around she may have a chance.

“Jason” – Since we are never going to spell this guy’s actual name, so we’ll just call him Jason. This may actual be one of our favorite moments of the entire season. The guy went on stage looking like some creepy guy obsessed with Tulisa even though he could not even pronounce her name right, but he was actually pretty good. He wasn’t perfect, but this is at least a fun story worth watching for some time.

Christopher Maloney – It’s Christopher Meloni! He looks different than he does on “Law & Order: SVU.” (Oh wait, it’s not the same guy. He spells it differently.) This was an interesting story about a guy overcoming nerves, and it actually was fantastic. We don’t know if he can win, but he at least does give the Overs category this year a contender.
