Weekend box office: ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ stuns with $54 million

It’s at the head of the pack.

When the box-office numbers for Friday were released, we knew that “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was going to end up surpassing its projections of $30 to $35 million for the weekend. However, what we didn’t realize was that the movie was going to turn into a blockbuster.

Now, it is being estimated that the James Franco – Andy Serkis origin story (which has received rave reviews thanks to some of the Weta Digital technology used for the apes) is going to finish this weekend with a stunning $54 million. Considering that the film held on extremely well 24 hours after its release, odds are that it will easily recoup its $90 million budget and bring this franchise back in the near future.

Meanwhile, one film that failed to do nearly as well was R-rated comedy “The Change-Up.” thanks to entering a landscape already full of adult comedies, the $52 million Ryan Reynolds film only ended up grossing around $13 million for the weekend to finish at #4. (Both “The Smurfs” and “Cowboys & Aliens” did well enough in their second weekends to surpass this gross.)

Also noteworthy this weekend — with $143 million in the bank, “Captain America: The First Avenger” does not even have to worry about international sales when it comes to making back its $140 million budget.

Did you see anything at the movies this weekend?
