Earlier this year, we were told that with the exception of a few delays here and there thanks to the holidays, the fifth and final season of “Fringe” was going to run pretty much straight through up until its series finale airs in January. So is this still the case? Let’s just say that the answer there is both “yes” and “no.”
While there are still not going to be many pauses in the auction following the show’s September 28 return to television, executive producer Joel Wyman has confirmed on Twitter that the finale will air a little later than expected on Friday, February 1. The reason for this specific air date makes at least a little bit of sense to us. For one thing, we are sure that Fox will give the series the weeks around Christmas and New Year’s Day off, if for no other reason than that they haven’t shown any desire to just burn it off like NBC did with their fifth and final season of “Chuck.” In addition, they may be taking a little bit of extra preparation here in the event that the MLB playoffs end up pre-empting an episode or two in late October or early November. This notoriously happened on multiple occasions last fall, and thanks to that the midseason finale ended up airing at a time when it really did not function as one.
We already know that the stars are going to be jumping forward in time for several decades for the new season, as they will be squaring off the Observers that we first met during the season 4 episode “Letters of Transit.”
