“Glee” has just shown off a brand-new extended promo for next week’s season 4 premiere, and there is one thing that we get out of it right away: despite the notion of it possibly not being the best idea in the world, the show is doing just about everything that it can to compare one class of New Directions to the next.
Early on in this clip, we see Jacob Ben Israel, back after some sort of ridiculously long layoff, as all of the students of the glee club who is going to be the new Rachel Berry. Their response? Basically, let’s just say that Arite, Tina, Blaine, and Brittany all think that they are worthy of handling the majority of the club’s solos. Meanwhile, a little bit later in the promo Sue Sylvester introduces new character Kitty (Becca Tobin) by saying that she is pretty much Quinn Fabray, minus being “manic-depressive,” having a baby that she later gave away, and ultimately ending up in a wheelchair for a time after suffering a near-fatal (and text message-related) car accident last season.
In reality, we all know that Lea Michele and Dianna Agron’s characters are too unique to every be fully replaced; what the writers are trying to do here is not even do that so much as just re-established the hierarchy of the show whether it be the star vocalists or the cheerleader out to cause problems. After all, we are going to see plenty of Rachel this coming season, and Quinn will also return at some point this fall for the show’s Thanksgiving special. (Agron has been filming a movie in Europe, which explains her absence from the season 4 photo shoot.)
