There were a number of performances during the 2012 MTV VMAs, and this is for good reason: everyone wants to see some crazy things happen. These numbers are always over the top here more so than on any other show, and they typically include everything from mash-ups to crazy costumes to unexpected pairings.
With that, let’s get straight to the performances, which we will be adding to as the night goes on.
Demi Lovato, “Give Your Heart a Break” – Demi actually performed this song during the pre-show outside, and it was plenty of fun. We love how Demi always sings live no matter what, and this wasn’t an easy thing to do given the heat, the crowds, and the fact that she was moving around the stage for most of the performance.
Rihanna mash-up – While we didn’t care some much for the first half of this performance, the second half was something special. It gave Rihanna an opportunity to not only sing her global smash hit in “We Found Love,” but also get in the crowd more than we have ever seen an artist at the VMAs. It was one heck of a bold performance, but it was one that was enjoyable just to see the fans try and behave themselves.
Pink – This was a really cool performance, mostly because it really was an homage to everything that Pink has done over the years on the show. She started with a few lines of “Get This Party Started,” did some acrobatics, and then wrapped things up with “Blow Me (One Last Kiss).” Who else loved the dancing big lips?
Frank Ocean, “Thinking About You” – First off, we must applaud MTV for giving a new artist a chance to shine here, especially one in Ocean, who has touched so many people around the world. In a night that is stuffed with loud and often overbearing performances, this was a subtle piece of wonder and joy.
One Direction – You knew that this was going to be energetic, and it was as the British group hit the stage for a pair of their greatest hits. Really, this was just about everything that you would have expected from a One Direction performance.
Taylor Swift – The country took to the stage for the first time with her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
