Meredith and Derek have been through quite a bit on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and following the latest tragedy that unfolded during last May’s season finale, the couple seems to be taking a completely new and exciting approach to the world of romance: diving in head-first to romance versus allowing their insecurities to get the best of them.
In the first photo to the left from the September 27 premiere (entitled “Going, Going, Gone”), you get a pretty good idea what we are talking about here as our two doctors share a passionate kiss right in the middle of Seattle Grace. A little time has passed since Lexie’s death, but it is going to be very much still on their minds.
So what was the decision-making process like for restoring Meredith and Derek to the days of old? Speaking to TVLine, Shonda Rhimes explains that she really did want to explore some sense of happiness again for these two characters, especially after everything that we have seen them go through over the years:
“One of the things I said to the writers was, ‘I want a lot more romantic scenes. I want to see that Derek and Meredith are a happy, sexy couple … They basically settled down in a lot of ways. They are very settled. They’re married, they have a child, and they’re both working. I want to see what that means for them as a couple and how they, against the odds, manage to keep that relationship sexy and fun. So we’re playing with that and it’s been really fun.”
Will these two stay in a state of bliss forever? Probably not, but this scene does at least serve as some extra validation that at the end of the day, this is probably not one couple that Rhimes ever has any intention of splitting up moving forward.
