Chord Overstreet is one of the new series regulars appearing on “Glee” this coming season, and the producers are wasting no time at all when it comes to giving us a new storyline for a character in Sam Evans that has occasionally gotten lost in the shuffle outside of a romantic subplot with Amber Riley’s Mercedes.
Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Brad Falchuk was even quick to admit that there were some struggles when it came to Sam over the years, and that this was something that the producers were striving to fix early on this season by giving him a story that should intrigue fans all across the board:
“Toward the end of last season we got how to write for [Chord] and [who] the Sam character was … And he really stepped up. It’s nice having him be, in terms of the guys there in the choir room, the male lead right now. He’s definitely carrying the weight that he needs to carry there, in a way that was very different than Cory [Monteith] or Mark [Salling]. He has a very specific innocence to him.”
We have already heard plenty of rumors surrounding Sam’s romantic life for the new season, and it looks as though he is going to get a completely new love interest away from either Mercedes or Quinn. So who is it? That is currently unclear, since producers seem to be mostly interested in focusing in new character Jake (Jacob Artist) in a sort of love triangle with Marley (Melissa Benoist) and Kitty (Becca Tobin). We don’t really know where Sam fits in yet, or who could even be open to him given how many students in McKinley High are already involved in some sort of relationship.
