Want some more scoop concerning “Game of Thrones” season 3? For that, we are going to turn to the man who knows the series better than anyone: author George R.R. Martin.
Martin was present at Chicon7 on Saturday to talk about the show as well as his source material, and early on one of the moderators in Maureen Ryan of The Huffington Post (who was kind enough to take notes and a recording from the entire discussion) asked him a rather interesting question: just how old is Mance Rayder, who we are about to meet on the show, supposed to be? While we did not get a concrete answer, he did speak in some specific terms:
“I probably saw him as roughly the equivalent of a Quorin Halfhand … It’s mentioned that Mance has grayish hair, so he is not a young man. Yes, he is about to be a father for the first time, but his wife is much younger than he is.”
When it comes to the man playing this coveted part in “Rome” actor Cirian Hinds, Martin described as “amazing,” and said that he was “interested in seeing what he brings” to the part. Hinds has yet to begin shooting his portion of season 3, which will be alongside such other actors as Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) and Ygritte (Rose Leslie) in Iceland later on this year.
Just in case you are curious as to what episode in particular Martin is hoping to pen for the new season, he told the audience that he has already turned in his script for the seventh episode (which will likely air in May 2013) entitled “Autumn Storms.” Martin also wrote the famed “Blackwater” episode from last season, which has already gone down as one of the series’ strongest to date.
