It was the worst-kept secret in the world of television over the past few weeks, but on Tuesday morning it was finally made official: “Live! with Kelly” is now going to become “Live! with Kelly and Michael.” Former NFL defensive end Michael Strahan is now officially the new co-host of the show, and he is going to be bringing a new sort of personality (and fan following) to morning television in the process.
In addressing the crowd on the show for the first time, Strahan simply sounded a like who had just woke up on Christmas morning:
“I adore you and I am so happy to be here and be a part of this … You know how they say it’s a dream come true? I truly can’t say that because I didn’t even know I could dream this.”
While many retired NFL stars do go on to find careers in broadcasting, few have success in a venue other than sports. This is what makes Michael an enormous success story, and the best part about this is that he will continue to do pre-game coverage for NFL broadcasts during the show’s season.
Michael replaces here a man in Regis Philbin who is undisputed as one of the biggest names in the history of television, and it’s a smart thing that the producers for this show did not go out and try to grab a similar character; rather, they went for someone with such an enormous personality of his own that he would not be intimidated by some of the daunting comparisons to Regis, and would continue to bring his own vibe and sense of humor.
Do you think that this gig really is the best thing not only for Michael, but for the show? We want to hear more of your thoughts below! To check out more news on his hiring, be sure to check out the story here.
