We are nearing the end of our “Dancing with the Stars” spotlight series, but this is not a case by any means where we have run through all the good contestants already — as a matter of fact, the pair that we are focusing on now may be one of the best in the history of the entire show.
Even though Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkoskiy may not be the most technical pair out of the group participating this season, you have to give them credit for one thing — always being entertaining, and having a back-and-forth that is perfectly suited for a sitcom in addition to a celebrity dance competition.
Claim to fame – Being an actress of stage and screen, with two of her most notable TV credits coming from “Cheers” (where she played Rebecca for nearly 150 episodes) along with “Veronica’s Closet.” In recent years, she has created her own reality shows including “Fat Actress.” Ironically, she has lost a great deal of weight since then.
Pace placement – Runner-up (season 12).
Past and current partner – Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
Story on the show – As one of the older participants on her season, Kirstie was an immediate underdog — but thanks to a surprisingly strong amount of dance technique, and a hot-and-cold relationship with Maks that was always entertaining to watch, she made it all the way to the finale and nearly stole the win against NFL star Hines Ward.
Strengths – Kirstie has been through a lot in her life, and it shows at times when it comes to her dedication. This is a woman who refuses to let her age define her, and works harder than many contestants who should theoretically be in better shape or have more energy. She’s also an entertainer, and knows how to play characters better on the ballroom floor than many of the show’s athletes.
As for her partner, it’s hard to imagine Kirstie with anyone other than Maks — this really is a match made in ballroom heaven.
Weaknesses – First and foremost, Kirstie’s other commitments have led to her having a little bit of a later start into rehearsals this season — and even though we know that she has kept up dancing since she was on the show, this could be problematic still. We also worry about there being so many strong performers on the show, and there is one other worry that shakes us to our core — the recent allegations that were made against Maks by former partner Hope Solo. Although he has denied any wrongdoing and it seems hard to believe that ABC would keep a man employed if Solo’s accusations were true, we still wonder whether or not it puts a dent in his support base.
Prediction – It’s too hard to imagine Kirstie being the first person out this season, but we also think against so many winners with more athleticism that this is going to be a tough year for her to make it extremely far. Ultimately, we see her falling somewhere in the middle, and Maks will be left without a Mirrorball Trophy yet again.
