Should reality stars have a place someday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? This is a debate that really has been carried on for almost a year now, as we have the entire genre of reality TV balloon in popular, and such people as Kim Kardashian and Snooki become staples of the tabloids the same way as Tom Cruise or Jennifer Aniston have over the past several years.
This debate was taken to a new level by Kim Kardashian, who told V Magazine in a recent interview that one of her life goals was to get on Walk of Fame put on by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. It is one of the ways to really identify yourself as an entertainment icon, but there is just one problem with Kim’s wish at the moment — a rep for the chamber tells The Hollywood Reporter that they have no interest in adding them to the mix “right now.” They also went on to explain the following about their criteria:
“Part of criteria in being honored is receiving awards such as Emmys, SAG Awards, Oscars, etc. in the category of television, live-stage performance or motion pictures … They have to have a career in the business of acting for five years or more.”
Although it does look as though you can close the door on Kim having a star on Hollywood Boulevard in the near future, who’s to say what could happen ten years from now? The words “right now” are curious, and they do give hope to people who may want to aspire for that someday. However, for the time being we tend to side with the chamber of commerce — while it is not a slight against reality stars per se, people who devote their lives to a craft such as acting should get preferential treatment to those who strike lightning in a bottle thanks to being themselves and being smart businessmen and women. There are other ways of recognizing such people, and it does not have to be in Hollywood.
