We have some major achievements to celebrate when it comes to “The X Factor” on both coasts, and they each involve a singer associated with the international franchise being able to celebrate having some sort of #1 record in their home country.
Let’s begin with new American judge Demi Lovato, as the news broke over the weekend that her single “Give Your Heart a Break” climbed to the top of the top 40 airplay charts. This is the first time that any song from the former Disney Channel star has made it to the top, and this one did so in the same way that Demi has made her career thus far — through hard work and no willingness to quit. This song has spent months slowly and slowly building on the radio, and it has accomplished a feat because of it that a number of other popular artists out there have yet to achieve. (Even many of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga’s recent tracks have failed to hit this mark.)
“Give Your Heart a Break” followed up “Skyscraper” as a single from her album “Unbroken,” which was considered in many ways an inspirational comeback after some time in a treatment center.
Now, we turn to reigning UK champs Little Mix. Despite some worries that a ratings drop last season would lead to trouble for the girl group selling records, that hasn’t happened at all — the girls’ new single “Wings” has debuted at #1 on the British singles charts. This is the second top single for the group, who experienced similar success with their coronation song “Cannanball” last year. It’s common for a post-show anthem to go #1, but what is more impressive here is that their fans stayed devoted to them despite the long layoff between the show last year and now, and the promotional department did a great job making sure “Wings” was played everywhere in the UK.
For the record, “The X Factor” ratings were down again this weekend to 8.6 million, which is a drop of over a million from where they were at this stage last year.
