With its third audition show of the season Saturday, “The X Factor” brought out some fun and also some hair-raising decisions. We started off the episode with one of the most ridiculous and exploitative decisions in the show’s history, and we ended it with one of the best auditions we have seen thus far.
Nicola Marie – We wasted about ten minutes for this audition — and this made even worse by the fact that these ten minutes were spent with Nicola talking. The only thing more irritating than Nicola’s voice was her trying to talk about just how nervous she was to be on stage.
The only thing that was more irritating than all of this? The fact that the judges actually put this woman through so they could humiliate her for a few more weeks this season.

Jake Quickenden – Thankfully, The second contestant that we had on the night was someone who could actually sing and deserved to go through to the next round. What is a little bit interesting about Jake is that he has a little bit more of a pop voice, but he chose to sing a notorious rock anthem in “Use Somebody” — which could be interesting if he continues down this road for the rest of the competition.
Alison Brunton – We feel really bad for this lady’s kids. Not only was she terrible and they probably have to listen to this at home, but they’re going to have a really hard time dealing with this at school.
Joseph Whelan – Joseph is going to be on this show for a really long time. He may not necessarily be the best singer in the history of this show, but he has style — he is easily the closest thing they have had to a pure rocker on in some time, and it certainly does not hurt him in any way that he is a good-looking guy that will probably scoop up the female vote left and right.
Melanie Masson – Wait … where did she come from? This woman has been seriously spending the past few years dressed as a fairy and teaching small children, and somewhere in there she was wasting a pretty a phenomenal talent. She has more power to her voice than anyone we have heard on the show so far this season, even though she may still need to a work a little bit on finding how to succeed in some of the quieter moments of the song.
We’re going to be watching out for Melanie — after all, this could be potential finalist if she figures it all out.
