When it comes to Derek on season 9 of “Grey’s Anatomy,” we know that we are going o be looking at a case of some good news and some pretty bad news. The good news for him should be fairly obvious — he is alive following the plane crash that has taken the life of at least one character (in Lexie) already. The bad news? The injury that Patrick Dempsey’s character suffered is still going tto play a major role in his life.
Speaking in an interview with TVLine, executive producer Shonda Rhimes shared the following message when it came to what sort of debate Derek is going to be having when it comes to his new limitations and his emotional state:
“How do you remain effective and relevant when perhaps you may never operate again? … Or if you are going to operate again, perhaps you want to be the same kind of surgeon you were again with the same skill.”
There is also a possibility here that Derek could end up landing a job somewhere other than Seattle Grace, and this would lead towards him trying to start over without some of the same baggage somewhere else. However, we really can’t see the show “Grey’s Anatomy” existing for two more years if many of the main characters were all living and working in other cities. (We would need to create three or four spin-off shows in order for this to happen with any sort of effectiveness.)
Do you think Derek will be able to operate again, and what is the best course of action for him in your mind after going through what he has? We want to hear from you below! If you haven’t heard about the upcoming Meredith-and-Cristina-themed episode already, you can be sure to do so by heading over to this link.
