Even though we are still almost a year away from seeing “The Amazing Spider-Man” hit theaters on July 3 of next year, Sony Pictures is apparently out to prove that they are the masters when it comes to forward thinking.
According to reports, the studio has decided that May 2, 2014 is going to be the perfect date for a follow-up to the first movie starring Andrew Garfield — which means that there will be less than a two-year gap between the first film and the second.
More than anything else, this move shows just how confident Sony is with their superhero brand even before the first film has a completed final product — but in many ways, this is understandable consider that the first three films spawned a billion-dollar franchise. The studio likely wanted to reserve the date to ensure that they would get the key position to kick off the summer movie season, and therefore would not see any other film out there try to compromise their own success by running into a web of competition.
The first movie will feature a re-imagined origin story, focus on Gwen Stacy over Mary-Jane Watson, and have The Lizard as the primary villain. What are you hoping to see from the sequel?
