It’s not often that you see an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” that actually stands on its own without playing much of a role in the overall story, so it is therefore news whenever such a thing is unveiled — like now.
Speaking to TVLine in a new interview, executive producer Shonda Rhimes unveiled that one of the upcoming season 9 installments is going to be entirely focused on Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh’s characters, and it will be a story that is completely different than everything else that we see:
“It’s just the story of Meredith and Cristina … It’s really going to be original. I don’t think we’ve ever told a story the way we’re telling a story in this episode … It’s not a regular episode. I won’t be able to explain what the gimmick is until I’ve seen it shot and we’ve decided on the visual style of it. But it is going to be fairly different.”
When you are nine seasons in to a show, it would be pretty easy to just naturally allow things to slowly grow stale. This is what we are ultimately giving Rhimes and company some credit for — not all of their experimental episodes end up working (the musical hour, for example, felt totally superfluous), but they are at least bold enough to take the risk rather than just playing it safe. It’s nice to see something that is so mainstream still come up with ways to play with form and narrative.
This episode is not going to be the season premiere on September 27, and we can tell you that this will revolve around the doctors trying to establish a normal routine again after the tragic plane crash in last year’s finale.
Do you think this episode sounds like a particularly excellent idea to you — even though we really don’t know that much about it yet? If you want to read some more scoop about a wedding taking place this coming season, be sure and head on over to this link.
