As a part of the iHeartRadio concert event in New York City Wednesday night, we got an opportunity to hear some new music courtesy of a number of contestants from “American Idol” season 11 — even the reigning runner-up.
(Kudos to Mjsbigblog for cutting all of these videos.)
Jessica Sanchez, “Fairytale” – After a coronation song in “Change Nothing” that was dust compared to Phillip Phillips’ “Home,” we’re pleased first of all that Jimmy Iovine and Interscope have actually found Jessica some music this time around that is age-appropriate and is also something that pop radio could end up playing.
Ultimately, we know that Jessica wants to do a lot of urban music and R&B, so the pop sound here comes as a little bit of a shock. Could this be a bit of a compromise between herself and the label? It’s possible — even if this is not in Jessica’s wheelhouse per se, it is tailor-made for pop radio and it could get some more of her R&B tracks more attention.
Joshua Ledet – When it comes to wheelhouses, this song (which Ledet never announced the name for) was everything that we could ask for and then some. It was a great slice of soul and blues that gave Joshua a chance to work out his crazy voice. Can we have more please, like now? The only real issue here is that we wish there was a little bit more of a hook.
Colton Dixon – If you have seen a show this summer, then you probably already know Colton’s new song “Never Gone.” Since this is a post about new songs, though, it only seems appropriate to include it here in case you haven’t heard it. Like with Joshua, this is the perfect song for Colton — not only does it fit his crossover Christian audience, but there is enough of a hook here that this could really take off.
