Fan Expo 2012: Julie Benz on ‘Dexter,’ Joss Whedon, and ‘Avengers 2’ dream

As a part of the 2012 Fan Expo held in Toronto Thursday, actress Julie Benz — a legend of this point in the science fiction and action communities thanks to her parts on such shows as “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Dexter,” and the upcoming Syfy series “Defiance” — took the opportunity to give a Q&A session with hundreds of fans cramped into the convention center’s room 701.

So what did she have to talk about? There were many interesting subjects — from her present work to some reflection on what she has done in the past. When it came to “Defiance,” she teased how the show (premiering in April 2013) is going to be one of the first to be released simultaneously with a game that will allow you the opportunity to interact with some of the same characters. Benz also took the opportunity to throw in here a pretty funny reference to her past work while talking about the program’s multi-platform launch:

“It’s two portals into the same world — you can play the game and watch the show, or watch the show and play the game … it’s very cool … When you play the game, please don’t kill me. Don’t kill my character — I think I’ve died enough!”

“Dexter” was of course a hot topic, and she states (as she has done in the past a number of times) that she did not want to leave the show, and she did not even know Rita was going to die until the last minute. She also no longer watches the series, but not out of any sort of anger that she holds (since she doesn’t really hold any at all) — rather, she said that she has a hard time watching programs that she was once a part of since the illusion of the world is gone to her.

Given her past as Darla on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” there were of course many questions about her relationship with Joss Whedon today. At one point some fans tried to start a campaign to have her play the Wasp in “The Avengers 2,” which she said that she would be happy to do — then again, she also said she would be happy to read the phone booth for Joss if that is what he wanted.

Be sure to stay tuned, as we are going to have more highlights from this weekend in Toronto as they happen. If you want to check out some more news on “Dexter” and a certain past connection to Rita that is coming back on the show for season 7, be sure and visit the link here.
