‘American Idol’ notes: Adam Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey

For this Wednesday morning edition of “American Idol” notes, let’s hope that you enjoy watching videos. After all, we have a pair of covers from some of our favorite singers to go along with the latest music video from new judge Mariah Carey.

Adam covers Bob Marley – This is not exactly a cover that we ever expected to hear, and with that in mind Adam Lambert’s version of “Is This Love?” manages to make us smile even brighter.

While at the Take 40 Lounge in Sydney this week as a part of his Australian promotional tour for “Trespassing,” Adam gave a really rocking version of the Marley hit. This is is good that we really don’t have to say too much about it — just enjoy hearing his expand his musical dimensions yet again.

Kelly Clarkson does Gotye – Everyone loves Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” right? This song was taking over the world earlier this year, and now Kelly has decided to also give the song a shot.

This video comes courtesy of a concert in Long Island, and it is particularly haunting — though we admit that part of us missed the xylophone from the original version (at least until we realized just how fantastically ghostly a spin Kelly was putting on this song). She is not the only show contestant covering this song, as Elise Testone has been doing a duet with Phillip Phillips to it throughout the “American Idol” season 11 tour.

Mariah’s new video – Let’s hope that you love boxing, since this is the theme of Mariah Carey’s brand-new music video for “Triumphant.” We’re admittedly a little confused about Carey’s strategy here — why release this song before this upcoming season of the show? Jennifer Lopez leverage the show to get “On the Floor” to become a smash hit, and she could do the same.

There’s no questioning that Mariah is one of the best voices in music history, but the real problem with this track seems to merely be that there is not enough of her in it. No offense to Meek Mill or Rick Ross, but they are not why people listen to a Mariah Carey song.
