One day after highlighting the intensity that is Apolo Anton Ohno during our “Dancing with the Stars” spotlight series, we are now throwing the focus on someone who was notorious for having a great time in the ballroom during season 5 — racing legend Helio Castroneves.
So will Helio succeed this time around? We’re admittedly a little more worried about him than some of the other former winners, but if you disagree with us be sure and share your own predictions at the bottom of this article.
Claim to fame – Being one of the most successful IndyCar drivers of the past ten years … and being on “Dancing with the Stars” since he was hardly a household name beforehand.
Past placement – Winner (season 5)
Past partner – Julianne Hough
Current partner – Chelsie Hightower
Story on the show – Helio was a little bit of a wild card going into the show. He was young and in shape, but he was not used to performing in front of people outside of behind the drivers’ seat. However he turned out to be more than a great dancer — he was fun, and his chemistry with Julianne was off the charts for almost the entire season. He even returned to the show to judge a remake of his classic “banana dance.”
Strengths – As we just said, he’s a entertainer trapped in a racer’s body. Helio knows how to make dancing fun, and we as viewers often appreciate that more than someone with no personality who is a better dancer than everyone else. He also has a partner in Chelsie who could capture some of the same sort of energy and passion that Julianne did so many years ago.
Weaknesses – Helio has kept a relatively low profile since his season, and not being talked about may put him at an early disadvantage — especially since we don’t really know if he has been dancing since he was on the show last. While Chelsie looks good on paper, Helio could be exposed for not being the best dancer on this season if they don’t capture the sort of magic he had with Julianne.
Prediction – It would be great to see Helio take home a Mirrorball again, but this time around it will likely be a long shot. We don’t think he will be he first dancer out of the show, but we really think he could be in danger the first couple of weeks unless he finds a way to blow everyone out of the water quickly with more than just his personality.
