Just a matter of days after it was first revealed that “Live! with Kelly” was going to be airing its first show with a new co-host on Tuesday, September 4 we are already hearing just who this co-host could be.
According to a new report from Broadcasting & Cable, NFL legend Michael Strahan — beloved in the New York community for his time with the Giants — is going to land the gig that will make him the official replacement for Regis Philbin. While we were unsure about this rumor when it first came up months ago that he was in contention, we have really grown on the idea ever since actually seeing him on the show. Strahan has come across as funny, smart, and articulate, and he is enough of his own person that he will not be permanently stuck in Regis’ shadow. With his NFL background, it’s also possible that he could draw more male viewers to a show that has been traditionally female over the years.
Some of the other candidates for this gig have included the likes of Jeff Probst (who has now landed his own talk show), Ryan Seacrest (who moved on to NBC News instead), Josh Groban, Rob Lowe, and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Seth Meyers. There was also a contingent of people who wanted the show to wait until “How I Met Your Mother” was over in a year or two so that they could sign Neil Patrick Harris as a permanent co-host.
The best thing about this booking for Michael? That “Live!” really took its time and made sure that he and Kelly had the chemistry to make it happen. This way, ABC and Strahan can each feel secure that this partnership can work, and he will not be jettisoned out the door right away if there are some bumps in the road.
