The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards are looking to do more this year than just recognize the best musicians in America — they are also looking to give some more recognition to some worthy athletes.
MTV announced on Tuesday that Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber — the five members of the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team affectionately known as the “Fierce Five” — have all been booked to present at the awards show airing on Thursday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. They join the likes of Miley Cyrus, Wiz Khalifa, and Mac Miller in the presenting department.
When it comes to performers, Taylor Swift is once again going to be hitting the stage to perform her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” Anyone who knows the VMAs is already a little bit familiar with her history on the show, and ironically the man behind the infamous acceptance speech-hijacking in Kanye West was featured in a promo for this year’s show alongside Kim Kardashian and new host Kevin Hart. As for some other performers, they include the likes of Green Day, Pink, Alicia Keys, and One Direction — who will be making their debut at the show to a chorus of screaming fans.
It’s almost a given that this show is going to feature some big-time watercooler moments, so be sure to be back on the page in a couple of weeks — we’ll have every moment from the red carpet along with a winners list and some performances highlights. Drake and Rihanna are the current leaders in nominees with five each.
