Life is about to get that much more interesting in “Downton Abbey.” Although the hit series is not going to return to PBS here in America until next year, British station ITV will be airing the new episodes of season 3 this fall beginning in a matter of weeks — and we now have some more promos to celebrate that very occasion courtesy of the television network across the pond.
While we know that there are going to be all sorts of storylines unfolding in the midst of what happened last year, these two clips really put the focus squarely on one thing — the Dorager Countess’ new rival. Maggie Smith is going to be in for some tough battles this season when she runs into someone who is as cynical and as quick-witted as she is — a character played by Shirley MacLaine who is visiting the Abbey for a very particular reason.
In the first promo, we see the Countess strike first before MacLaine has even arrived; then, the legendary actress responds with a quip of her own during the second clip. MacLaine is a major get for show executive producer Julian Fellowes, especially since this series was not particularly well known to Americans back when it was airing its first season (or “series,” as it is referred to in Britain). Expectations are going to be through the roof when these episodes air — after all, “Downton Abbey” has made a killing in the Primetime Emmy nominations this year, even if Smith is still the only person actually favored to walk away with a trophy in their category.
What do you think about these promos, and could MacLaine serve as a worthy rival to Smith in your minds? Be sure and share your thoughts below, and pay a visit over to the link here if you want to hear more about filming the final few episodes of the season.
