Should Absentia season 2 premiere in US in summer 2019?

While there is no official confirmation as of yet regarding an Absentia season 2 on Amazon / AXN / whatever other network or provider you have, all signs are indicating pretty clearly right now that it is happening.

Yet, there are still some other questions that remain, and that includes trying to determine precisely when a season 2 could feasibly air given some of the changes behind the scenes (including a new showrunner) and that production is not apparently slated to even begin until later this year. That does raise questions about the premiere date, especially if Sony continues the strategy of having it roll out in countries overseas before premiering in the US a little bit later on down the road. We understand the thinking there, especially since this is a series filmed in Europe and it gives viewers in some of those countries incentive to check out the show live on their respective networks.

Let’s say that the rollout schedule is the same as it was for season 1 — if production on season 2 starts off six months later, that means that the season 2 premiere date in America could also be six months later. Think here in terms of August 2019. Maybe it gets pushed up a little bit earlier, but we don’t want to be overly optimistic and hope for season 2 to premiere in February like we got it for season 1.

In some ways, though, a season 2 premiere date could actually make more sense.

1. This is suitable summer entertainment – In many ways this is like a summer action movie with a lot of twists and turns, high intensity, and pretty non-stop action. It has that same sort of action-thriller feel to it that many people out there like from some of those projects.

2. Less competition – One of the biggest challenges about season 1 premiering in February was that it was days before the Super Bowl, airing right against Altered Carbon, and also the Winter Olympics coming up. There was a lot of ways in which possible new viewers may have not heard about the show.

3. There could be a shorter break between season 2 and season 3 If the talk about a two-season renewal becomes a reality, that means that the writers, producers, and the cast can plan ahead. It’s similar to Outlander receiving a two-season order for seasons 3 and 4, which has enabled them to premiere two seasons one year apart.
