It looks like you can almost pencil this in — Nicki Minaj is going to be the next “American Idol” judge alongside Mariah Carey.
According to a new report from Us Weekly, everything is getting close to being in place now when it comes to the “Super Bass” rapper joining the show — even though an announcement is not official and is still forthcoming:
“I’m not sure the deal is completely done yet, but yes, she is definitely doing it … A few more slight things to sign off on but it is happening.”
As we reported previously, one of the potential hang-ups surrounding Nicki being on the show was whether or not Coca-Cola (one of their major sponsors) would be okay with having one of Pepsi’s top spokespeople be a key part of the panel. Is this getting resolved? Probably, and all they will really need to do is ensure that Nicki keeps her endorsement deal quiet while on the show. We personally think that this is a great move for producers to make, though — while Mariah Carey is a legend, she’s not who is on top 40 radio stations today. This is an artist more current even than some of the coaches on “The Voice,” and she will immediately bring to the show a hip-hop fanbase that has never really been featured at all. Plus, don’t you want to see what she wears every week?
This move does hint even more that a four-judge panel is coming, and the other two people are likely to be some sort of country artist along with a more pop-oriented male artist such as Nick Jonas, Enrique Igleasias, or former contestant Adam Lambert. Randy Jackson is leaning towards moving into more of a mentoring role rather than staying on the judges’ panel.
