It’s been almost ten months since Regis Philbin took his name off of “Live! with Regis and Kelly,” and we are now finally going to find out just who is going to be joining Kelly Ripa as the new co-host for the program.
On Monday, the ABC-operated show announced that Tuesday September 4 — otherwise known as the day after Labor Day — will be when the big announcement is finally made as to who is going to join Kelly on one of the most high-profile gigs on daytime TV. Early in the process, there were rumors surrounding Ryan Seacrest and Jeff Probst — but they have landed gigs elsewhere in the daytime world. Rob Lowe was mentioned, but he already has a full-time job in “Parks and Recreation.” Most recently, it was Seth Meyers from “Saturday Night Live” that was mentioned as a favorite — but he has since downplayed his interest in joining a show in order to keep doing what he does as the show’s head writer and “Weekend Update” anchor. (Considering that “SNL” has alreasy lost Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Abby Elliott, this probably is the right move to make.)
With all this in mind, the only two names bandied about as favorites that could still be are former NFL star Michael Strahan and singer Josh Groban — though these guys also each have some other commitments that are going to be keeping them busy away from the show. It’s possible that there could be someone in the running that nobody even knows about yet, as what often happens in these sort of cases are that the best candidates are the ones kept secret from America until the announcement is made. What we do know at the moment is that Claire Danes and “American Idol” champ Phillip Phillips will be the first guests on the new show.
Who do you think is the best candidate out there to join this show along with Ripa? We want to hear some of your thoughts with a comment below!
