‘Monk’ alum Tony Shalhoub joins Kal Penn for CBS pilot

If you missed Tony Shalhoub on TV, he is joining Michael J. Fox as the latest icon of the small screen to book a pilot deal signaling his return.

According to TVLine, the Emmy-winning star of “Monk” — who is remembered for this even more now than he is for “Wings” — has signed on to play a¬†Lothario¬†with four ex-wives on the now-untitled CBS comedy pilot from “How I Met Your Mother” producer Rob Greenberg. This pilot was at one point entitled “Ex Men,” and it stars Chris Smith (“Paranormal Activity 3”) as a man who moves into a short-term housing center after getting left at the altar. Kal Penn — who guest-starred on “How I Met Your Mother” last season as a love interest for Rob — has also signed on to play a role.

This series is one of the early pilots for next season that is taking shape, and what is so interesting about it at the moment is how it is making good on some other pilots that didn’t work out. In the case of Shalhoub, he had filmed a part in a NBC project called “Friday Night Dinner” (an adaptation of the British hit) that did not end up getting picked up to series. Meanwhile, Penn was a part of a series on Fox — a network that was his home for many years courtesy of “House.”

Yes, this show does have a good many similarities to “The Exes” on TV Land — but CBS already proved with “The Mentalist” that they are not above having shows with similarities to other shows. Even with an relatively-unknown lead in Smith, it does look as though there is plenty to like about this pilot so far.
