Just in case we didn’t have enough singing shows on TV, The CW is getting ready to enter the fray Thursday night courtesy of “The Next” — a show that features four music stars working to mentor contestants while completely immersing themselves in their world. The artists live with them, work alongside them, and really take the time to try and figure out how they can succeed.
One of the most-popular stars on this season is Joe Jonas, and the Jonas Brothers member did his part to explain what fans can expect from the show in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter prior to its launch Thursday night:
“I literally will show up wherever my contestant is either working or they live. I’ve had to babysit with them, I’ve had college basketball players. Gloria [Estefan] worked at a restaurant, she was on a tractor — the most bizarre situations.
“Our show, you really do the behind-the-scenes stuff. You don’t really get that in the other shows. You only get to see their two minutes every week on stage and sing, and then they get judged, and then they go and work on it by themselves.”
Obviously, the hope here is that “The Next” will be able to be a consistent player for The CW this summer at least until new programming resumes, and for the time being we have it as a toss-up. While the presence of Jonas is great for young people, “Duets” also had some big names in music and was barely topping a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic — and that was on a popular network in ABC. With that being said, the format here actually feels a little bit more exciting if enough people know about it and opt to tune in.
