In our third day of doing the “Dancing with the Stars” spotlight series, we are looking at an All-Star is not only one of the most popular athletes ever, but he ran all the way to the Mirrorball Trophy back in season 3 despite there being some controversy over the fan voting. There’s no doubt that Emmitt Smith is a great dancer, but here is what we are wondering now — have the extra years away from the spotlight hurt the Hall of Famer’s chances at winning again? Let’s dive in and find out.
Claim to fame – Being the NFL’s all-time leading rusher as a player for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals.
Past placement – Winner (season 3)
Past and current partner – Cheryl Burke
Story on the show – Emmitt was clearly one of the three best dancers during his season, but was he better than Mario Lopez? A good many of the former “Saved by the Bell” star’s fans felt as though he was robbed in the final vote — but unfortunately, Mario did not sign up for this season despite being asked.
Strengths – As an athlete, you know Emmitt is going to bring it on the dance floor night in and night out. He’s a hard worker, and as a running back he is also incredibly graceful on his feet. Since he was last on the show we’ve seen such other football stars as Hines Ward and Donald Driver do very well, but Emmitt still is the one who set the pace.
You also can’t ignore that Emmitt is one of the people lucky enough to be working with his former partner. Cheryl will know how to train him properly, and can also teach him about what has changed in the years since season 3 of the show.
Weaknesses – With Emmitt, he’s now 43 years old and it’s been six years since he was a part of the show. That’s a long layoff for anyone, especially someone who has been relatively low-key ever since. He’s still in great shape and that should make up for some of the rust, but we’re sure that there are some other contestants who have danced more than he has since leaving the competition.
Prediction – We’re not sure the Cowboys faithful will be as strong for Emmitt this time, and the failure of Michael Irvin to crack the top three shows that there are some vulnerabilities here. We expect Emmitt to be good enough to last for a few weeks, but he could be in some danger after that. He’s also going to be splitting the athlete vote with Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves.
How do you think Emmitt will do this time around? We want to hear from you below! If you want to check out some other stars in our spotlight series, be sure and visit the link here.
