While the decision to air the “Major Crimes” premiere immediately after “The Closer” may have stolen some of the creative thunder away from Kyra Sedgwick’s last mission, it certainly proved to be the right move for TNT when it came to the ratings.
Overall, the show’s two-hour send-off Monday produced a whopping 9.1 million viewers that is more than any show pulled in across the major networks. As for the 18-49 demo, it managed a figure close to a 1.6 rating — which is strong for a network in TNT that often skews older than most others on cable. It was close to being the show’s most-watched episode ever, but that honor instead goes to the season 3 finale, which had about 100,000 more viewers total. Overall, though, this is an impressive send-off for a show that became an institution of cable TV over the years, and even in some ways helped to spark the debut of many popular TV series.
As for the show that TNT spun off on Sedgwick, “Major Crimes” got off to a pretty major start of is own. The show drew an audience of 7.2 million, which makes it the most-watched premiere of the year over “Dallas” and “Perception.” The show also is now one of TNT’s most successful launches ever behind “Rizzoli & Isles” (watched by 7.55 million) and “Raising the Bar” (7.7 million). It’s going to have a tough challenge keeping all of those people, though, considering it won’t have the same sort of massive lead-in audience ever again on the network.
