When we heard that the majority of the series regulars for “Glee” season 3 were returning for another go-around this year, we were elated — however, what was not clear was just what was going to happen to some of the characters who exist beyond New Directions, but are still beloved among the fans. We already found out that Dot-Marie Jones would be back for another year as Coach Beiste — and now, we’re getting confirmation that we will see more from another supremely talented actor in Mike O’Malley as Burt Hummel.
In response to a fan on Twitter Monday night asking if we would see more of Kurt’s father with him this coming season, executive producer Ryan Murphy put out a strong vote of confidence:
“Always. They are my favorite two. Mike O’Malley is so talented.”
The last we saw Burt, he was emotional at the thought of his son leaving Ohio, but also realized that it was what was going to be best for him in order to follow his dreams. While not every person on “Glee” has the best family dynamics, O’Malley’s character is in many ways indicative of the sort of parent most young people wish they had — especially when they are going through something that can be as difficult as coming out. O’Malley has received an Emmy nomination for his work, and hopefully he will be handed the sort of material that merits another this coming season.
