There’s some big news breaking when it comes to the landmark tenth season of “NCIS” — we are now going to meet the man that Gibbs was named after. To mark this occasion, producers have also went out of their way to cast an actor who already has an “iconic” tag thrown around him thanks to his role in “Star Wars” — Billy Dee Williams. The actor is going to specifically play Leroy Jethro or “LJ,” a World War II veteran whose heroics inspired Gibbs’ father to give him the same first and middle name.
Speaking to TV Guide in a new interview about this booking, executive producer Gary Glasberg had the following to say:
“This is a very rich, emotional story and we couldn’t be happier to have Billy Dee Williams bringing this character to life .. Mr. Williams appeared in some of my favorite films from Lady Sings the Blues and Brian’s Song to the Star Wars saga [The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi]. Watching him work with Mark Harmon and Ralph Waite [as Gibbs’ father, Jack] will be a real treat.”
It’s unclear just what episode Williams will appear in, but it adds just one more touch of star power to a series that has already seen its fair share of legends stop by. “NCIS” remains the most-watched scripted show on television, and somehow manages to do it without any major fanfare. This has been their biggest get so far during season 10, which is going to return with all-new episodes beginning on Tuesday, September 25.
