Despite having a pretty uneven first season, the guest cast for “Smash” season 2 is starting to become so good that we are genuinely getting exciting about the show again. First, we heard that Oscar winner and “American Idol” alum Jennifer Hudson was going to be joining the show for a major arc — and now, it’s been confirmed that there will be a mini-“Will & Grace” reunion courtesy of Sean Hayes.
NBC announced on Monday that the actor — who starred alongside Debra Messing on the sitcom for many years — is going to be here for multiple episodes this coming season as Terrence Falls, a famous comic actor from the world of TV and film who is going to be making his debut on Broadway in a show called “Liaisons.” What is really unclear here is just what sort of interaction this is going to lead to him having with the cast of “Bombshell” that is being run by Messing’s Julie and Anjelica Huston’s Eileen. However, all we do know is that (per the press release) he is going to be a “major thorn in the side” of Megan Hilty’s character of Ivy.
This is not the only booking with his former employer in NBC that Hayes has for this coming season, as he also has an upcoming guest-starring role on “Up All Night” season 2, where he is set to play the part of a former assistant to Maya Rudolph’s character. The actor was most recently featured in the “Three Stooges” feature film, and this is really proof that he is having a rather productive year.
What do you think about Hayes’ casting, and do all of these castings in your mind add up to this being one of the best seasons that we have seen of “Smash” yet?
