While there are always liberties that are taken any time a book is made into either a movie or a television series, we have to give “Game of Thrones” some serious credit for at least trying to stay as faithful as they possibly can to the George R.R. Martin series. It’s not always an easy undertaking, but showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have really managed to find a way to make it happen.
Considering, though, that the show is going to be breaking up the third book in Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series (in “A Storm of Swords”) up into two seasons, it does beg the question as to whether or not the series will be able to continue the trend that they have set up in the past two years. While we never know for sure until the final product ends up arriving on the screen, Martin tells G4 in a new interview (which was just uploaded via SpoilerTV) that he is both optimistic and excited for what is looming ahead:
“David and Dan would kill me if I give to much away… ‘A Storm of Swords’ is the basis for the third season. There are changes — David and Dan are notorious for introducing a few characters … In some ways they are more dangerous than I am. There are characters who are dead in the TV show that are still alive in the books… [But] the show has been very faithful, and for the most part that is going to continue to be true.”
Benioff and Weiss are already deep into the thick of production on the show’s third season, which is going to be filmed across multiple locations in Europe and Africa over the next several months. The official premiere date will be on Sunday, March 31 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time — though it’s hard to even say that without acknowledging just how far away that feels.
