There’s some more bad news coming through for one of the stars on “Basketball Wives” — though on this occasion, it really has nothing to do with what we have seen on TV.
Multiple sources have confirmed that Miami Dolphins star Chad Johnson (who has since worked to remove “Ochocinco” as his last name) was arrested overnight after allegedly headbutting his wife Evelyn Lozada in the face during a heated argument at their home. TMZ reports that at one point, the argument got so bad that the reality star attempted to flee by going to a residence owned by her friend.
Johnson has since been released on bond early Sunday morning, and his team has released a statement saying that they are looking into the matter. The NFL has taken personal conduct more seriously than ever in recent seasons, and it is possible that Johnson could see suspension or even release as a result of this result (just for good PR, if nothing else). This news is truly terrible for the newlywed couple, as you never want to see anyone go through a situation quite this tragic — it’s also not a good situation for VH1, who is set to premiere “Ev & Ocho” on September 3. How can you promote a show about a happy couple and a wedding when someone has just been arrested for domestic violence? The show has been built around their love story — one that is surely stained and possibly even destroyed by this arrest.
From a television perspective, this once again shows the problems networks face when they want to invest in something that can be as fleeting and as combustible as romance — E! took a similar gamble with Kim Kardashian and her wedding special, and lucky for her it managed to air a couple of weeks before she filed for divorce.
