With the glut of singing competitions happening around the world at the moment, we have to admit that we are not as enthused about the launch of “The X Factor” in the United Kingdom next weekend as we otherwise would be. It’s a great series without question, but it’s also set in a country that has another singing show in “The Voice” UK (plus “Britain’s Got Talent,” which features some singers) and sooner or later, that talent pool is going to run dry.
However, that does not appear to be the case yet — at least per some comments from judge Gary Barlow to The Sun:
”The talent we have seen this year has been unbelievable. I’m so pleased as that was my one complaint of last year. I thought we were missing four or five better singers in our final 12. ‘It’s been extraordinary this year. Everybody thinks so. I have even heard cameramen saying to each other that it’s a massive improvement.
”The standard has definitely gone up a few notches. I think the audience is going to love it.”
Barlow also made some surprising comments to the Daily Mail suggesting that some of the contestants who made it far last season became “lazy” after landing it on the live shows, and were not creative enough when it came to thinking up some great performances. This may be true, but the creativity we saw with some of the acts (from winners Little Mix to even the controversial Kitty Brucknell) was far and away better than hearing the same ten songs over and over again — something we have here in America courtesy of anything by Whitney Houston or Stevie Wonder.
