‘The Newsroom’ preview: Ratings and phone-hacking

While “The Newsroom” has certainly had its fair share of critics over its first season, it also has plenty of fans — and on Sunday night’s new episode, many of the stories that we have come to talk about all season long are going to come to a head.

First things first, we have the issues of the ratings for “News Night” not exactly being up to par with some of the competition. Even though the news may be more accurate, the news they cover is not always buzzworthy topics. Isn’t it nice to treat your audience as something more than fish in a barrel? Sure, but that doesn’t always mean that you are making your company money. With all of this in mind, expect to see Charlie, Will, and all of ACN face a critical question — do they shift back to more of a “News Night 1.0” structure to make people happy, or keep moving in this aggressive direction?

Speaking of aggressive, there is another scandal unfolding with ACN’s parent company — possible phone-hacking practices by the gossip magazine TMI. There is a reason why they have been able to get all of the crazy information that they have over the past several months, and the simple answer is that they may have had an advantage. However, with reporting this story comes a major issue that Fox News ran into when it came to the News of the World scandal — how much do you focus on bad news when it negatively impacts people who work in the same corporation that you do? You have to please the higher-ups on some level, and harping on one of their own failures will not make them too happy.

What story are you the most excited to see in this coming episode? We want to hear from you below! To check out our review of last week’s episode, be sure and hit up the link here.
