For our Thursday evening edition of “American Idol” notes, we are starting things off with something that should get everyone excited — some new music courtesy of Lee DeWyze!
Introducing “We’ll Be Alright” – We’ve always loved Lee’s music the best when he takes in down a folksy sort of road, and we’re glad to see this is what he has done here. It seem a little lazy to compare it to Mumford & Sons since that seems to be he go-to comparison for folk music these days, so for us maybe the best way to describe this song is a little bit of “Dear Isabelle” (our favorite song from Lee’s first album), a little bit of early John Mayer, and just a hit of indie folk group Fleet Foxes.
The song was performed this week at a KIIS FM event featuring Lee at L.A. Live, so be sure to check it out below. It’s really quite good, and it passes the test that we like to throw out with all new songs — it gets better every time that we listen to it. Thanks to Red Beanie Blog for pointing out this video.
More on “Home” and the Olympics – Phillip Phillips’ coronation song “Home” is actually one that is similar to Lee’s new music in some ways, and he is still riding high off of the publicity that the song received during the Olympics in London last week. So how did the song make it to the show? This looks to be partially the case of the right people being in the know at the right time.
In a fascinating new story from Entertainment Weekly, senior Olympics producer Brian Michaels of NBC says that the song was featured with the help of his daughter Megan, who is actually a supervising producer of “American Idol.” She recommended the song to him, and it really didn’t take long at all for the two parties (plus the folks over at 19 Entertainment) to realize that they had something potentially big here.
Michaels also explained why he felt the song worked well to play for the Women’s Gymnastics Team:
“The very first time I heard it, the instrumental part was such a great anthem … The song is so perfectly put together for our purposes… you had this great instrumental lead-in, you’ve got the vocal that can play in the clear, and then you’ve got the instrumental out. For me, that’s perfect.”
Pharrell Williams close to signing a deal? – Finally, we’ll close with the latest judging rumor that is floating around town. It’s been long-discussed that Pharrell Williams is a serious candidate to become a judge, and the New York Daily News ire reporting now that the deal is close to being done, and the singer / rapper / producer is telling associates that he will be taking part in the show’s auditions next month.
Do we believe this fully? Not yet, though Pharrell does have close ties with fellow judge Mariah Carey and the show’s last-remaining original judge in Randy Jackson. If Randy does opt to become more a mentor, we can really see why this move could be a smart one.
