Kevin Hart is set to be the host for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, and he has decided to recruit a pair of the biggest stars in the world in order to help promote the show — however, only one of them is actually a big-name artist in the world of music (unless you count a song that was supposedly released as a joke).
In the clip below, you can check out the network’s first promo for the September 6 awards show, which features a rather comic exchange between Hart and one of the hottest couples out there in Kim Kardashian and Kanye West — or “Kimye,” if you like to diminish two people’s names to just one word. There are some laughs at the start of the spot, but we wonder if making a joke about having “a white hood” is really the best thing to do when promoting a show that is all about music. We like to this that we enjoy humor as much as the next guy, but anytime that you bring up a joke about something that was responsible for killing an enormous amount of people, it’s a touchy subject — the only time that you can sometimes get away with it is at a roast, and even then it can be difficult. (Just ask Jeff Ross for proof of that right now.)
Hart already has a big challenge when it comes to hosting this show, mostly in that VMA emcees are not always the best received. Russell Brand was notorious for making people very uncomfortable in his two stints on the show, and Chelsea Handler was pretty much panned for her own turn as a host two years ago — so much so that the show opted to go hostless in 2011.
