Although we know for sure that Eric Dane, Chyler Leigh, and Kim Raver are going to be gone from “Grey’s Anatomy” by about the time the third episode of season 9 rolls around, there is still one character that is very much in the air — Jessica Capshaw’s Arizona. During the season finale, she was one of the doctors injured the worst in the plane crash — and while we know that Dane’s Mark managed to survive long enough to at least be hospitalized, the same is not exactly clear when it comes to Callie’s wife.
So is Shonda Rhimes doing anything to try and assure us that we will indeed be seeing more Arizona? Hardly. Speaking to TV Guide in a new interview, the showrunner instead was coy about the character’s fate:
“I don’t want to say anything about that yet … The first episode would have to air, and then I’m happy to talk about it, but I don’t want to say anything yet.”
It’s always hard to speculate about anything when it comes to some of Rhimes’ series, if for no other reason than that she has been known to kill off characters that nobody ever saw coming. However, we’re still leaning towards an Arizona return for one reason and one reason only — it seems excessively cruel for Rhimes to decide to destroy two fan favorite couples within the span of a few short months. With Meredith and Derek and Owen and Cristina having their share of troubles, Callie and Arizona have been in many ways the model of stability this past year. While stability is not necessarily exciting as an actor to play, it is important to establish that not everyone is miserable in their lives all of the time. Plus, there couple be something that happens to Arizona that adds drama to the relationship, but still keeps her alive.
