Joss Whedon is coming back to TV — at least in some shape or form.
While many people are probably looking at the announcement that the former “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Firefly” creator is returning for “The Avengers 2” as an enormous deal, we’re a TV site — and we are equally intrigued by what may have practically been a footnote in a larger announcement. Whedon is on tap to create some sort of Marvel-related TV series for ABC. We doubt that he would serve as a ahowrunner, but he could be involved in some sort of way similar to how J.J. Abrams oversees “Fringe” and the upcoming “Revolution.”
It’s not shock that ABC wants a Marvel-related TV series, and they have been working on one of “Hulk” for quite some time. However, we’ve never quite thought that this was the best character to go with — mostly because the premise does not yield the same sort of complexity as some other heroes could. We’d love to see a show about a lesser-known hero that can allow for some creative freedom over a 22-episode season, and then have a way to make this character fit into the feature film universe in some capacity. Disney is building an empire thanks to their acquisition of Marvel, and there has been a gap in the TV market ever since “Smallville” ended (and even it was more about drama than action) — even if The CW is readying their “Arrow” series from the DC Universe.
