If you love “How I Met Your Mother,” you know that the question of “who is the mother?” is obviously just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to why we watch. This is a show all about relationships — including the ones like Marshall and Lily’s, who are obviously set in stone as a married couple and are now looking forward to raising a child together in Marvin.
With a new arrival certainly comes change, and also a story that is both predictable but also appropriate — what happens to your friends when you have a kid? Anyone who has been through this situation in real life knows that priorities change, and you are certainly not going to see your childless pals as much as you once did. This insecurity is going to cause some paranoia among some of Marshall and Lily’s friends — at least according to what executive producer Craig Thomas is saying to Entertainment Weekly:
“You’ll see the group deal with that issue [with Marshall and Lily] of ‘I feel like we can’t come to you with our stuff anymore because you have this whole bigger problem of being parents. But I still want to be friends. I still want to bring my stuff to you.'”
The end result of this story could lead to some great opportunities for comedy — while we know that Ted is probably going to be great around kids, Robin is more likely to be a disaster. Meanwhile, Barney will probably just try to dress Marvin up in a suit and teach him how to pick up his future preschool classmates. Kids are something, though, that this group is going to have to get rather familiar with soon — after all, we know that Ted’s future wife is going to get pregnant pretty fast after they get together, though how fast is dependent on whether or not this show ends in 2013 or 2014.
